Your call to action on this effort is most welcome. I concur with the
importance of preparing a redevelopment and growth plan for Kailua Village and its surrounding
area, for the reasons the Action Committee provided as well as the broader role Kailua Village
plays in our economy and for the enjoyment of our island residents and visitors.
Regrettably, we will not be able to take action on this matter until the active volcanic
emergencies have passed and a current staff shortage of Planners has been resolved with new
hires. Because of the unpredictability of time needed for both matters, and until the fiscal
consequences of the volcanic emergencies have been assessed ( e.g., the extent of public facilities
and infrastructure replacements and repairs), we are uncertain as to when we can address funding
allotment requests for this and other Plans called for in our adopted Community Development
Plans.
You are welcome to follow up with me on this matter, if you wish, later this year when we have
hopefully regained a fiscal perspective that can accommodate this important planning effort for
Kailua-Kona and Kailua Village in particular.
Sincerely,
Signed
Michael Yee
Planning Director
