JNtY OF... <br /> COUNTY OF HAWAII 44 -'=4 STATE OF HAWAII <br /> '1TE OF'N''' <br /> • <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 269 1.7 <br /> A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT <br /> AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A <br /> DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO THE FRIENDS OF <br /> HOKULE`A AND HAWAI`ILOA FOR THE "MAHALO, HAWAII SAIL" <br /> EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH IN WEST HAWAII. <br /> WHEREAS, members of the Polynesian Voyaging Society sailed the Hokulea around <br /> the world on a historic three-year voyage, called the Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage, to <br /> explore and build global partnerships to improve our oceans and"Island Earth"; and <br /> WHEREAS, to thank the people of Hawai`i for their support, crew members of the <br /> voyaging canoes Hokulea and Hikianalia have commenced the "Mahalo, Hawai`i Sail,"which <br /> will include visits to approximately 40 ports for an educational outreach to nearly 80 communities <br /> throughout the Hawaiian Islands; and <br /> WHEREAS, The Friends of Hokule`a and Hawai`iloa is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit <br /> organization whose mission is to teach and perpetuate the Hawaiian traditions of building, <br /> restoring, and caring for canoes; and <br /> WHEREAS, The Friends of Hokule`a and Hawai`iloa will be helping with the "Mahalo, <br /> Hawai`i Sail"by coordinating outreach events for crew members to engage with schools and <br /> organizations through service projects,presentations, and canoe tours; and <br /> WHEREAS, The Friends of Hokule`a and Hawai`iloa is requesting funds to assist with <br /> costs for food, drinks, and supplies for outreach events when the crew members of Hokule`a and <br /> Hikianalia visit West Hawai`i in September and October of 2017; and <br /> WHEREAS, one of the goals of the Department of Parks and Recreation is to facilitate <br /> opportunities, such as this educational outreach,that meet the needs of the Big Island community <br /> while maintaining the cultural uniqueness of our rich heritage and diversity; and <br /> WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawai`i County Code, <br /> Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via <br /> resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, <br /> activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, <br /> therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that <br /> Contingency Relief funds from Council District 8 will be appropriated to the Department of <br /> Parks and Recreation to provide a grant to The Friends of Hokule`a and Hawai`iloa to coordinate <br /> events during the "Mahalo, Hawai`i Sail" educational outreach in West Hawai`i. <br />
